The Five Weirs Walk is a five mile trail along the River Don starting around Lady's Bridge in the Wicker immediately North of the City centre and ending at Meadowhall. The trail connects to the Upper Don Trail, the riverside path to Rotherham and the Transpennine Trail. The Five Weirs Walk can be turned into a loop when connected to the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal Towpath.
The majority of the path is flat and level, suitable to walking, cycling and wheelchairs too. There is one small section of steps near Bold Street but these can be bypass by using Bold Street itself.
Starting by Lady's Bridge in the Wicker, there is more litter and graffiti around than any of the rest of the trail, but it is also a fairly short section. The Wicker Weir, however, is not one of the five.
Between the Cobweb Bridge and the Sheffield Bailey Bridge is the first weir, the Walk Mill Weir. Burton Weir is second, in one of the greener stretches of trail near Salmon Pastures Nature Reserve. It is not uncommon to see kingfishers in this section. This section is gated, and inaccessible after 5:30pm.
Sanderson's Weir to Brightside Wier passes through a more industrialised area and is less sheltered by the trees. On the approach to Brightside Weir, the trail dog legs round away from the river due to the Forgemasters site. The signage is a little sparse here so a map is recommended.
The final section between Brightside and Hadfields Weir feels comparatively short. Each weir on the route has a salmon ladder.
The trail is maintained by the Five Weirs Walk Trust and the River Stewardship Company. On warm, sunny days, the trail is a welcome escape from the city, and an interesting alternative to tram, train or car travel to and from Meadowhall.
